Have You Felt Sick After A Massage?

Have you ever felt “sick” after a massage? It’s something I see now and then, and it’s not as uncommon as you might think. Here’s why it happens and how to handle it:

Detox and Toxin Release
When I massage you, it boosts your blood and lymphatic circulation, which helps your body release stored waste products like lactic acid. These can enter your bloodstream, which might make you feel fatigued or give you a headache. Think of it as your body flushing out the waste, but sometimes this process can feel a bit overwhelming. This detoxification response, or “healing crisis,” is a sign that your body is clearing things out.

Dehydration
Hydration is another big factor. During the massage, your muscles release fluids along with toxins. If you’re not properly hydrated, your body struggles to flush these out. That’s why I always remind clients to drink water before and after the session—hydration is key to helping your body recover and feel its best.

Lymphatic System Activation
The massage can stimulate your lymphatic system, especially if you’ve had lymphatic drainage therapy. This system is crucial for removing waste from your body, and when it’s kicked into gear, the sudden increase in fluid movement can make you feel a bit off until your body balances out again.

Emotional and Physical Release
Massage isn’t just physical—it can stir up emotional energy, too. Many of us carry stress and tension in our bodies, and a good massage can release some of that. Sometimes, this emotional or mental release leaves people feeling drained afterward. Physically, deep tissue work can cause minor muscle inflammation, much like what you’d experience after a workout, leading to some temporary fatigue or discomfort.

What to Do
To help avoid feeling “sick” after a massage, make sure to hydrate well, eat healthy, and give yourself time to rest. Your body is working through a lot of positive changes, and these symptoms are often a sign that healing is happening.

So, if you’re feeling a little off after a massage, it’s not that you’re “sick”—it’s your body’s way of detoxifying, recovering, and resetting!

To your healthiest self,
Vanessa
